- Skiathos
Also known as the Mykonos of the Sporades, Skiathos is the best known island of the Sporades archipelago. Skiathos is synonymous with sea, sun and fun. Its beaches, some sixty, are considered among the best in Greece. Its nightlife is lively, thanks also to a significant number of foreigners who live there all year round, and who keep it awake in the summer but also during the low season. But Skiathos also has a luxuriant nature, with a very luxuriant flora and fauna ready to be explored…
How to get there
In Skiathos there is an international airport, with flights to the main Italian cities. Frequent and quite cheap flights from Athens, even if often with not very happy schedules.
You can opt for the ferry, which is only three hours from Volos and one hour and forty from Agios Constantinos.
An island well connected and with frequent trips to Thessaloniki, as well as other nearby islands in the Sporades chain (especially in high season).
Getting around Skiathos is very simple. The bus passes on the main road every 20 minutes in the summer. It is very easy to rent mopeds and scooters. There are excursion boats leaving from the old port to Lalaria, one of the most photographed beaches in Greece, and to the caves of Galatzia, Halikini and Skotini, which can only be reached by boat. Car rental is also available and you can even rent a jeep for off-roading.
History
The island of Skiatos has been a land of immigration since prehistoric times, thanks to its welcoming port, sheltered by the four nearby islands. The port itself was used as the base of ancient Hellenic Triiris during the Persian wars.
The first inhabitants whose name we know are the Pelasgians, who founded a city right where the city of Skiathos now stands. Skiathos was the site of major battles during the Persian Wars. Nel 200 la città venne distrutta da Filippo di Macedonia, mentre fu conquistata dai fratelli Ghisi nel 1207, che fortificarono la penisola di Bourtzi per difendere l’isola dagli attacchi nemici. In the 14th century the population moved north, founding the kastro, of which the ruins remain today. In 1800, thanks to the wealth of timber, the island was an important center for the construction of ships.
