- Anafi
Anafi is a very small island at the end of the Cyclades archipelago and to reach it you have to take old ferries that connect it with Santorini. The connections are not very frequent and in particular in the period of August it often happens that you no longer find tickets if you have not purchased them in time.
The island is frequented above all by the citizens of Athens and by those who have come to know it through the tam tam of word of mouth of those who have already been there and who praise the tranquility and beauty of the beaches..
The vital center of the island is Chora, the classic Cycladic village, with small white houses and overlooking the sea giving a unique view. Once upon a time there weren't even restaurants, today there are some but the few shops that exist often don't even have signs, and also there aren't many places to find accommodation, so if you intend to go to Anafi we recommend to book everything in time.
Near Chora, reachable by bus, you come across the first beach on the coast below the village: the beautiful beach of Klisidi, where you can find a few rooms for rent as well as a tavern.
Immediately after Klisidi is the beach of Katsouni, reachable on foot along a small path, and following perhaps the most beautiful beach of Megalos Roukounas vhe extends for half a kilometre; the last beach that is found is that of Monastiri, just below the promontory of Kalamos where the Monastery of Zoodochos Pighis is built on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo.
How to get there
The connections to Anafinon are numerous, so the journey must be planned very well.
The ferry trip from Athens takes 8 to 10 hours.
All ferries arriving in Anafi pass through Santorini.. There are several companies that make this journey, but each of these does not have more than a couple of ferries a week and usually at not very convenient times! This makes the island even more interesting to explore, don't you think?
History
In mythology, the island of Anafi is linked to the god Apollo and the Argonauts. In fact, it is said that the island would have been a gift from Apollo to Jason. Surely Anafi underwent the dominion of Crete, and then the Phoenicians passed through it. It was then the turn of the Dorians, in the ninth century BC. In classical times Anafi was part of the Athenian League, although contacts with the other members of the League were very limited due to its isolation. The island has often been plagued by pirates throughout history, and there are many tales of hidden treasures here and there. Due to its isolation, the island was used by the Romans as a confinement land.
