With its 34km of coastline, the island of Halki (Chalki) is one of the smallest islands of the Dodecanese archipelago. Halki is a small treasure of tranquility and authenticity, in the heart of the Aegean. It is the ideal island for tourists who they are looking for an untouched island. For this reason it is difficult to find a room. There is a daily gulet connecting the island to Rhodes and a hydrofoil once a week to Kalymnos, Kos, Nisyros and Tilos, but there are no ferries as there are no cars on the island. The island is foreign to mass tourism.
How to get there
Halki island has no airport. It is better to use the one in Rhodes, which is served by numerous international flights, and then use the ferries that pass through Halki. There are no buses in Halki.
History
In the past, the seabed of Halki was among the richest in marine sponges in the Mediterranean. The island was in fact one of the first for the production of sponges in all of Greece. Over time, the sea has exhausted its natural supplies of sponges and this has also emptied the island of its citizens who have emigrated for the most part to Florida. Today Halki has a population of around 400.
