Nisyros

Located between Rhodes and Kos, the island of Nisyros is a fertile island of the Dodecanese. The island is famous for the volcano that rises in its center, which is visited by tourists on day trips from Kos. The mineral-rich soil has endowed the island with beautiful vegetation and prosperous agriculture.

How to get there

Perhaps the best way to reach Nisyros from Italy is to fly to Kos and then use the ferries which, in the tourist season, are quite frequent (while they are less frequent during the rest of the year). The ferry trip takes about 2 hours. There are several ferries and hydrofoils from Kalymnos, Kos, Rhodes, Symi, Tilos and Kastellorizo.

History

The legends about the island are lost in the mists of time.
We know with certainty that the island was controlled by the Knights of San Giovanni from 1312 and that in 1314 it was conquered by the Venetians. The island was at the mercy of pirates, like most of the Dodecanese islands, and this meant that numerous hill forts were built. The Turks arrived in Nisyros at the beginning of the sixteenth century and it was later given to the Italians in 1912. The island was liberated in 1948, after having suffered occupations during the Second World War.
