Angistri

The beautiful island of Angistri is located in the Argosaronic Gulf just 7 miles from Aegina Island, the largest of the Saronic Islands. It has a population of no more than 1,000 and is one of the least popular Greek islands, making it an ideal destination for a peaceful and relaxing holiday. It is covered in lush green vegetation, has beautiful beaches and offers remarkable tourist infrastructure. It has three main settlement centres: Megalochori (or Mylos), Skala, which is also the main port of the island, and Limenaria.
The island used to be known as Kekrifalia, meaning 'embellished head'. It began to be inhabited about 2500 years ago. Homer mentions the island in the Trojan War to be an ally of the island Aegina. Also Thucydides, more or less between 470 and 335 a. C. and Diodoro between 90 and 21 a. C, mention the island of Angistri, although they use its original name.
The economy of the island is mainly based on agriculture and tourism, as for most of the Greek islands.
On the island it is possible to experience splendid excursions, beautiful routes among the magnificent and vast forests and visit the entire coast with your own boat, or hire one.
It is possible to move around the island with a small bus that connects Skala, Megalochori and Limenaria. In addition to this bus there is another, equally small, which travels the main roads and leads to the beach of Aponissos.. On the island there is also taxi-boat service, and a faster taxi service. In case you want to visit the many bays of the island, many excursions are organized for a number ranging from 12 to 150 people.

The island of Angistri is well connected, all year round, with the port of Piraeus and with the island of Aegina through catamarans and ferries. There are several connections every day.
Getting to theisland of Angistri takes about 2 hours, 30-45 minutes if you start from Aegina.
A hydrophile connects Angistri to the port of Piraeus and the island of Aegina. The journey takes approximately 1 hour from Piraeus and 15 minutes from Aegina.

There are beautiful places to visit on the island.
Skala
2 km from Megalochori, the capital of the island, is the main port of Angistri. It is surrounded by many picturesque beaches and is the most developed tourist resort on the whole island.

Limenaria
5 km from the capital, it is a traditional village located in the middle of pine trees.

St. Anargyroi Church
It is the most photographed church in Angistri. Located near Skala beach, it is white with a blue dome.

Small Islands of Angistri
The island is surrounded by many small islands. The best known are:
Metopes
On the island there is the pretty Church of San Teodoro.
Dorousa
On the southwestern side of Angistri. Here is the Church of the Prophet Elijah.
Kira
Northwest of Dorousa.
Spalathronisi.

Megalochori
It is located on the northern side of the island. It has a traditional architecture, with houses built in stone and painted white and with pretty courtyards. It is surrounded by vegetation and natural bays with crystal clear water and has a sandy beach and a small port where fishing boats moor.
Its importance dates back to ancient times, when it used to be a base for naval operations and a rearmament point.
The town has an old windmill. Although there are some newly built hotels, the traditional feel of the place remains intact. From Megalochori boats leave for excursions around the island.

To be seen
Church of Agii Pantes
The name means "Church of All Saints". It is located on a hill and surrounded by a pine forest.
The place is what remains of a village called "Kandouki", which no longer exists.

Church of Zoodochos Pigi
It is the Cathedral of the island and has wonderful frescoes.

Museums
There are no art or folklore museums on the island of Angistri. However the island itself can be considered a great permanent exhibition of art and folklore, being the ancient local habits survived until today, such as the economic activities, the clothes of the islanders, the warm hospitality of the people. The same goes for the many ancient Orthodox churches, large and small, with their impressive domed buildings, colorful mosaics, painted icons and interesting frescoes dedicated to the many saints of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Beaches
The island offers many beaches with crystal clear water.

Chalikiada beach
It is located 4 km southwest of Magalochori and is a large beach near the port of Angistri. Verdant cliffs surround the pebbled beach which is completely devoid of facilities.

Aponissos beach
8 km southwest of Magalochori is a small, secluded bay surrounded by lots of vegetation. Its waters are exotic, ranging in color from blue to green. It is the ideal place for swimming.

Dragonera beach
On the west coast of the island, it is located 3 km southwest of the capital and is a beautiful well-organized pebble beach with sunbeds and umbrellas. Its very relaxing atmosphere represents very well the whole feeling of coming to Angistri island. Dragonera beach especially attracts lovers of trekking and hiking.

Skala beach
It has many facilities and services and is only 100 meters from the port. It is the ideal place for families, as the water is shallow and ideal for children.

Mareza beach
It is 200 meters from Limenaria and its beauty is made up of the simplicity and magic of the place.
Mareza is a rocky beach, full of greenery, with deep and crystalline waters. It is very easy to reach the beach using all means of transport (bus, car, taxi).

Fun
The beautiful island of Angistri is the perfect place for a peaceful holiday.. The nightlife on the island is not as lively and intense as it is on other Greek islands. However, there are several places where it is possible to spend pleasant evenings.. There are also cafés, restaurants and bars in all places on the island. The most touristic and consequently liveliest places are Skala, Megalochori or Mylos.
Here there is a wide choice of taverns, restaurants, coffe-house, bars and nightclubs and it is possible to taste local dishes and sip drinks while listening to local and international music or dancing.

History

The island was inhabited since ancient times and known by the name of Kekrifalia, which means "beautifully decorated head". This name comes from the legend, according to which the goddess Afaia hid in the sea caves of Angistri to escape the fishermen of Aegina.
Angistri was part of the Kingdom of Aegina, ruled by the mythical king Aeacus, which included Aegina, Angistri and the neighboring islands. Since the 5th century BC, Angistri has been inhabited by populations from the Peloponnese. Angistri is mentioned by Homer as having participated in the Trojan War, alongside Aegina. The island is also mentioned by Thucydides and Diodorus.
The island has always been tormented by pirate raids, in fact the population at a certain point moved to the southern part of the island, where they founded the village of Limenaria.
