Poros

The island of Poros is 55 km from Athens and is separated from the city of Galata, in the Peloponnese, by a narrow channel. The island is made up of two islets, Kalavria and Sferia, connected to each other by a bridge. The word Poros means "strip of the sea", and derives from the strait that divides it from the Peloponnese. The island is full of beautiful forests that reached down to the beach, cheap accommodation, numerous cafes and taverns that animate it. Poros is less than an hour from Piraeus, and very close to the splendid beaches of the Peloponnese and the Saronic Islands.

How to get there

From the port of Piraeus, connections to Poros are quick and easy: the journey takes about a quarter of an hour. The first boat to Poros leaves Pireaus at 9.00am and the last boats leave Pireaus around 6.00pm.

History

In the north-eastern part of the island the remains of a Bronze Age settlement have been found. The ancient polis of Calauria was a powerful polis and part of several leagues. During the Mycenaean period it was the most important naval base in the area. Poros became part of the Roman and then Byzantine Empire. In 1484 the Republic of Venice occupied Poros using it as a strategic port in the sea battles against the Ottoman Empire. Venetian rule ended in 1715, when the island was conquered by the Ottomans. Poros played an important role during the Greek War of Independence in 1821 due to its strategic position. The first naval base of Greece was established in Poros. The island was also a Russian naval base.
