Folegandros

The small island of Folegandros was once the favorite destination of young Greeks, and the accommodations found there were only small spartan rooms, where there was no running water at all hours and in the evening we gathered to eat in the The only tavern with a public telephone!

Today it is one of the chicest destinations in the Cyclades, and the old woman Chora, the heart of the island, has been refurbished, the old houses around the Venetian castro have been rearranged, and the coffee, the taverns, i restaurants and modern resorts for tourists are now found throughout the island, without however falling into the excesses of tourism in Mykonos or Santorini.

The most beautiful beaches to see are that of Angali, only 4 kilometers from Chora, and from there taking the boat you can reach the beach Agios Nikolaos and the beautiful beach Livadakia, which competes for the primacy of the most beautiful beach on the island with that of Katergo, located on the opposite side on the southern coast, also easily accessible by boat.

How to get there

The island of Folegandros has no airport, so it will be necessary to take advantage of some of the nearby airports, such as that of Santorini or Athens, which have international flights, or that of Milos, which however has only internal flights.
By ferry, from Athens the journey takes about three and a half hours with Sea Jet ferries, while the slower ones take up to nine hours, because there are numerous intermediate stops on the other islands.
For Santorini there are both fast runs and ferries that make intermediate stops. The fast hydrofoils take about 40 minutes, and there are more embarkations a day, even if the cost is not very cheap. The ferries that make intermediate stops are cheaper but naturally take longer, but they are not there every day.
As for connections with other islands, good for Sifnos, Milos and the western Cyclades while for Santorini, Sikinos and Ios it is better to choose super jets or high speed. It stands to reason that most of the people working on the island will need to travel to the capital of the Cyclades, Syros, for licenses, permits, and administrative stuff, so it can be assumed that there will be a ferry to and from the isolate a few times a week.

History

The history of Folegandros is still almost completely unknown. But the discovery of very ancient settlements tells us that the island was inhabited in ancient times. We know for sure that it was inhabited by the Cretans, the Carians, the Dorians and the Athenians. Like most of the Cyclades islands, it underwent Venetian rule, which left us the inevitable Venetian kastro, until 1500. It was part of the Ottoman Empire, and then became part of the Greek state in the 19th century.
